Thermal cures in Salsomaggiore and Tabiano

Two waters, two spa villages, one town: Salsomaggiore's salty water eases joints, Tabiano's sulphur water clears the airways. Here is what the cures treat and how they differ from a day at QC Terme.

Salsomaggiore Terme has two kinds of thermal water: the cold, very salty salso-bromo-iodic water of Salsomaggiore itself, and the strongly sulphurous water of Tabiano Terme, the twin spa village in the same comune. Medical cures with both waters are given by the Terme di Salsomaggiore e di Tabiano, at the Terme Zoja and the Terme Respighi, and many are covered by the Italian national health service, the SSN.

QC Terme, in the Palazzo Berzieri, is something else: a wellness spa. Below: the two waters, what the cures treat, how to get them through the SSN, the 2026 hours and how to combine a cure with a spa day.

The quick answer

Medical cures are given by the Terme di Salsomaggiore e di Tabiano: at the Terme Zoja in Parco Mazzini, with salso-bromo-iodic water for joints, respiratory, gynaecological and venous problems, and at the Terme Respighi in Tabiano, with sulphurous water for the nose, ears, throat, bronchi and skin. With the SSN you need a prescription from your family doctor, one cycle a year, and a ticket of EUR 55 for ages 6 to 65. QC Terme, in the Berzieri, is a wellness spa and does not give medical cures.

What is the difference between QC Terme and the Terme di Salsomaggiore?

QC Terme is a wellness spa in the Palazzo Berzieri. The Terme di Salsomaggiore e di Tabiano is a medical spa company that gives thermal cures, many with the SSN, at the Terme Zoja and in Tabiano.

The company groups the Terme Zoja in Salsomaggiore (Parco Mazzini 17), the Terme Respighi in Tabiano (Viale alle Terme 32) and Villa Igea, a clinic for rehabilitation. The Terme Zoja also have a thermal pool used for rehabilitation with physiotherapists. An Italian travel blogger who visited QC Terme in 2026 expected at least one pool of thermal water and found none, and guessed that the thermal water is now used only at the Zoja.

What is salso-bromo-iodic water?

Salsomaggiore's water: cold, hypertonic and among the richest in mineral salts in nature, with about 150 grams of salts per litre, drawn from wells at 16 to 17 C.

The Terme di Salsomaggiore say it has the highest share of iodine (0.054 grams per litre) and bromine (0.23 grams per litre) of any thermal water, and that iron salts turn it rust coloured in the air. They credit it with anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving action. It is the same water that made Salsomaggiore a salt town long before it was a spa; its history is in the story of the Terme Berzieri.

What do the Salsomaggiore cures treat?

Under the SSN: joint and rheumatic problems, gynaecological inflammation, respiratory problems, a form of deafness linked to the nose, and venous problems of the legs.

The Terme di Salsomaggiore list these SSN cycles. Each cycle is set by your doctor's diagnosis.

What is special about Tabiano's water?

It is cold, strongly mineralised sulphurous water, known since the 1800s as the most sulphurous water in Europe, and it is used mainly for the airways and the skin.

The Terme di Tabiano describe a sulphurous, sulphate, calcium and magnesium water with a fixed residue of 3,660 mg per litre, about 600 mg per litre of bicarbonates and a very high content of hydrogen sulphide. The Terme Respighi call themselves the 'Terme del Respiro', the spa of breathing, and say they give more inhalation cures than any other spa in Italy. Treatments cover the bronchi, ears, nose, throat and skin, for adults and children; there is a voice centre and a wellness centre, T-Spatium.

How do you get thermal cures with the SSN?

Book first, then bring your family doctor's prescription with the diagnosis and type of cure, and your health card. The SSN covers one cycle a year, to be completed within 60 days.

The ticket is EUR 55 for ages 6 to 65, and EUR 3.10 for under 6s and over 65s whose household income is not above EUR 36,152; protected categories are exempt. Book on the freephone number 800 861 385, on +39 0524 582611 or at [email protected]. These rules apply to patients of the Italian health service; visitors from abroad should ask the Terme about their situation and private prices.

Can you combine a cure with a spa day?

Yes, easily: the cures run in the morning and late afternoon, and QC Terme is open from 9:00 until 23:00, or midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Cycles of 12 to 24 sessions mean most people stay in town for a while. On free afternoons, walk the Liberty centre, see our Liberty walk, or drive up to the wineries in the hills. Tabiano is a separate village in the same comune, a short drive from the centre of Salsomaggiore.

Five wines and five pairings in the hills above town: an easy afternoon between cures.
