Booking choice: The Liberty walk, from $23 per person. Check dates Compare the options below
Salsomaggiore's Liberty buildings sit in a compact centre between Piazza Lorenzo Berzieri and Viale Romagnosi. The town's tourist office publishes a short Liberty itinerary rated easy and suitable for families, and a licensed guide leads a 1 hour 30 minute walk through the same streets, in Italian.
Below: the route, what to see at each stop, whether you can go inside the Palazzo dei Congressi, the guided and private options, and how long to allow.
The quick answer
Start at the Terme Berzieri on Piazza Lorenzo Berzieri, then see the wrought-iron cage of the Pozzo Scotti, the neo-medieval Galleria Warowland (the tourist office), the Palazzo dei Congressi, once the Grand Hotel des Thermes, the Scalinata Berardinelli on Viale Romagnosi and Parco Mazzini. The walk is short and flat; allow an hour on your own. Inside the Palazzo dei Congressi, the Taverna Rossa and the Salone Moresco open only on occasional guided visits.

What is the Liberty route in Salsomaggiore?
The tourist office's route has six stops: the Terme Berzieri, the Gabbia del Pozzo Scotti, the Galleria Warowland, the Palazzo dei Congressi, the Scalinata Berardinelli and Parco Mazzini.
All of them are in the town centre, on the line from Piazza Berzieri, where the route starts, to Viale Romagnosi, where it ends. On the way, look at the shop signs, railings, gates, balconies and canopies: many draw on plant forms, which the tourist office calls an artificial park.

What should you look for at the Terme Berzieri?
The facade: twin towers with onion-dome tops, the word THERMAE on a band of ceramics, carved masks and colourful tiles by Galileo Chini's workshop.
The Berzieri opened on 27 May 1923, after a design reworked by Ugo Giusti in 1912 and decoration by Galileo Chini. Peacocks and odalisques appear among the ornaments. The painted halls inside are part of the QC Terme spa, so seeing them means booking the spa. The full story is in the history of the Terme Berzieri.
See the Berzieri from the inside, from its painted atrium to the pools, with free cancellation.

A neo-medieval palazzina next to the Berzieri, now the town's tourist office, with a small garden and a ramp at the entrance.
It is the place to pick up maps and ask about guided visits. The office lists these hours: from 7 April to 5 July 2026, Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 12:30 and 15:00 to 18:00; in winter, Wednesday 10:30 to 12:30 and Thursday to Sunday 10:30 to 12:30 and 16:00 to 18:00. The phone number is +39 0524 580211. The nearest car park, the office says, is on Via Roma, a few metres away.
What is the Palazzo dei Congressi?
The former Grand Hotel des Thermes, commissioned in 1898 and opened in 1901 to designs by Luigi Broggi; César Ritz and Baron Pfyffer bought it after the opening, and the town has owned it since 1965.
It was built as a five-storey hotel with 300 rooms, English Wikipedia says. After the First World War, Ugo Giusti and Galileo Chini designed its most famous rooms: the Salone Moresco in neo-Moorish style, with a cupola decorated by Antonio Veronesi, the Taverna Rossa and the Hall of the Caryatids. Today it holds the town library, a hotel school and a small congress centre. The tourist office's stories include Queen Margherita of Savoy and Gabriele d'Annunzio among its guests, and Bernardo Bertolucci shooting scenes for The Last Emperor here.

Can you go inside the Palazzo dei Congressi?
Only on occasional guided visits. The tourist office ran free visits in spring 2023, and in summer 2024 guided visits before evening concerts cost EUR 5, with free entry up to age 10.
The 2024 visits lasted about 45 minutes, needed booking and went ahead only with at least 15 paying people. We found no fixed opening hours for the public, so ask the tourist office at the Galleria Warowland about dates. The only bookable option that includes the inside, as far as we could find, is the private day below, which is non-refundable.

About 4 hours in the spa and about 2 hours at the Palazzo dei Congressi with a private guide, from $238 per person. Non-refundable: it cannot be cancelled or changed.

The Scalinata Berardinelli, a granite stairway that opens the view down Viale Romagnosi, and Parco Mazzini, a historic garden with box hedges, a pagoda and a pond.
The tourist office describes Parco Mazzini as an Italian garden inside a great ring, with elliptical Liberty lines and oriental touches, and it is listed in Emilia-Romagna's cultural heritage. The Terme Zoja, where medical cures are given, stand in the park. Coming from the station, the walk into town crosses the park in about 15 minutes, according to the regional tourist board. The guided walk also takes in Parco Corazza, Largo Roma, the City Hall and the Palazzetto delle Poste.

Is there a guided Liberty walk in Salsomaggiore?
Yes: a licensed guide leads a 1 hour 30 minute walk, in Italian, from $23. It meets in front of the Palazzo Berzieri and ends with an optional gelato tasting.
The walk, run by Italia in Tour, retraces the town's story from fossil salt to international spa, past the Terme Berzieri, the City Hall, Largo Roma, the Palazzina Warowland, Viale Romagnosi, the Palazzetto delle Poste, Parco Corazza and the Palazzo dei Congressi. The optional tasting is at the Sanelli gelateria, with local flavours. Arrive 10 minutes early: the operator says tours start punctually. It is a new listing with no reviews yet, and it cancels free up to 24 hours before. If you do not speak Italian, walk the route yourself with the table above.

A licensed guide for the Berzieri, the Congressi and the Liberty villas, in Italian, with a gelato stop at the end.
Explore the Liberty walkHow long does the Liberty walk take?
About an hour on your own, and 1 hour 30 minutes with the guide. Add time for the tourist office, the park and a coffee.
Combine it with the spa: walk in the morning, then use an evening ticket from 17:00 or a night ticket from 19:30. If you arrive by train, look at the station too: built in 1937 in white and pink travertine, it was designed by the engineer Aldo Cervi as a smaller version of Milan's central station, the tourist office says. Train times are in getting to Salsomaggiore.
After the walk, the evening spa starts at 17:00: book it with free cancellation.
